A professor emerita of psychology and women’s studies, she was also the University of Michigan’s expert witness on the value of diversity in its successful defense of affirmative action before the Supreme Court. Gurin is a key proponent of “intergroup dialogues”—facilitated face-to-face encounters between groups with the potential for conflict—as a strategy for promoting community across difference.Dr. Gurin is the author of 8 books and monographs and numerous articles on these topics. She directs the Program on Intergroup Relations at the University of Michigan.
