John Huggins & Bunchy Carter Commemoration 2017. On January 17th, 1968, two Black men were murdered in Campbell Hall over a discussion of the Departmentalization of the African American Studies department at UCLA. John & Bunchy were products of the High Potential Program, a retention project that recruited and directly enrolled Black and Brown students from the Los Angeles area. These students were also active in the program as recruiters and community activists in the Black Panther Party. AAP being the modern successor of the work of the High Potential Program, collaborates with the Afrikan Student Union to commemorate the legacy and lives of these two impactful men. We invited you to share in a key part of our history as Black Bruins on this campus as we pull towards garnering more momentum for strengthening our future.
On Thursday, February 23rd, 2017 from 6-9pm in the Learning Pavillion at Campbell Hall, we will be hosting a soul food dinner with a free screening of the Black Panther Documentary, 41st & Central.” We will also have words by the widow of John Huggins, Dr. Ericka Huggins.
