White House, UCLA & Community Sponsors Host Summit on Educational Excellence for African Americans

Updated: July 2, 2015 – Earlier this month, the White House joined with the UCLA Social Sciences Division, the Bunche Center, UCLA’s Department of African American Studies, UCLA’s Sociology department and community partners –  UTLA (joint NEA/AFT Union); Magic Johnson’s Taylor Michaels Scholars Program; and the Brotherhood Crusade – to explore “Educational Excellence for African Americans.”

The Summit sought to provide a platform for young Black student leaders to share their lived experiences and perspectives in order to help inform a policy agenda designed to increase educational opportunity and to improve educational outcomes for all Black youth.  The summit also looked at ways the University of California system could better support African American scholarship.
