TODAY Interactive Bunche Center Circle of Thought with John Densmore – 5/13/15
Bunche Center Circle of Thought Presents
John Densmore
Wednesday May 13, 2015
UCLA Faculty Center—Hacienda Room
12:00 PM—1:00 PM
Join us for a candid and interactive conversation with John Densmore as he talks with Bunche Center scholars and the audience about the relationship between music and social movements, and explores the question of whether Martin Luther King, Jr.’s vision of non-violent protest is possible in the 21st century.
An original and founding member of the iconic musical group The Doors, Densmore co-wrote and produced numerous gold and platinum albums and toured the world, writing and playing music that influenced a generation. Also an author, his autobiography, Riders on the Storm, was a New York Times’ bestseller. His 2014 book, The Doors: Unhinged, details the conflict between he and his band mates over the right to use The Doors’ name and examines how this conflict mirrors a much larger societal issue – that no amount of money seems to be enough for even the wealthiest people.
A longtime Bunche Center supporter, in 1991, Densmore established an endowment to support UCLA undergraduate students who major or minor in Afro-American Studies. Follow him on Twitter at @JohnDensmore.
Joining John on the panel:
Filmmaker John Scheinfeld (U.S. vs. John Lennon & Who Is Harry Nilsson) – currently directing a documentary on John Coltrane
UCLA Alum, former NOMMO editor, educator Jalila Salaam
UCLA Doctoral Student Jonathan Collins
Vanessa Tyson, visiting assistant professor in the Departments of African American Studies and Political Science, will moderate.
