Founders of Kinsey Collection Host SHI
Bernard and Shirley Kinsey, founders of the renowned Kinsey Collection of African American art and memorabilia, recently hosted the Bunche Center’s Summer Humanities Institute (SHI) at their oceanside home in Los Angeles. The ten SHI students for 2012 came from historically black colleges and universities such as Howard University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Tuskegee University in order to participate in the Bunche Center’s intensive, 8-week research program in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. The goal of the program is to increase in the PhD pipeline the number of young scholars interested in African American Studies. UCLA Today recently featured the program HERE.
You can read more about the Kinsey Collection HERE. As graduates of historically black Florida A & M University, the Kinseys had several words of wisdom for the visiting students, who were as inspired by the Kinseys’ efforts to preserve black heritage as they were by the couple’s success.
